At present, and according to the Spelthorne Local Plan, there is a proposal to rebuild the present delapidated Ashford Community Centre on the existing site in Woodthorpe Road. However, this location is on the very edge of Ashford and is not easy to access on foot for many residents. On making an oral submission in this connection at a recent hearing on the local plan my suggestion seemed to get considerable 'traction'.

It seems clear that we should take the opportunity presented by the rebuild proposal to construct the new facility on a more central location - possibly in Church Road and adjacent to Town Square and the Brooklands Court development. (As a councillor for Ashford Town I was frequently lobbied by residents of the development to help obtain a community/youth centre for the flats and this would indicate an immediate clientele for a new Community Centre alongside its use by Ashford residents generally.)

Ashford needs a 'shot in the arm' at the moment given the downturn in our retail sector and concerns over crime. A new, centrally located and attractive Community Centre could provide a very helpful community focus as well as much needed social provision. This would fit well with the 'Your Ashford' project recently started by Surrey County Council and the creative community work done by Ashford Wide.
